The Collective will be at the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park Fair on 30th June 2018 - do come and join us.
This year’s Summer Fair in Mile End enjoyed great weather and a large turnout. The Basketry Collective’s activities as usual attracted lots of children and adults and we were busy all day helping people make bird houses, bird feeders, rush coasters and placemats. Our 4 differently talented “tutors” were exhausted but elated at day’s end.
The new banner and publicity materials funded by the Basketry Assocation, together with BA leaflets, really “put us on the map” and will be used at similar future events. Awards such as these certainly enable groups to promote basketry, local groups and the BA.
We had another successful day at the Summer Fair with lots of visitors keen to have a go at making willow nests, birds and bird feeders.
We also had a display of willow baskets made by Karen Lawrence.
Traditional crafts (basket-making, hurdle making, chair maker) were well represented at the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park Summer Fair and despite some very heavy showers turnout was good and we had lots of visitors to the stand. Jo, Susannah and Judy had made a bamboo geodome ahead of time and visitors were encouraged to decorate this with items they made or with materials such as willow, rush, plastic tape, flowers etc. Some people made rush cordage and five element plaits – children and men proving the keenest and most patient; while others preferred to make dragonflies, angels and hats.
