THE BASKETRY COLLECTIVE is a group of basket weavers and artists, most of whom met while studying for the City and Guilds Level 3 certificate in Creative Techniques in Basketry, the last vocational course of its kind in the UK.
THE BASKETRY COLLECTIVE’S AIMS
OUR ETHOS IS TO combine traditional and contemporary basketry techniques, using a wide range of natural and recycled materials, to create unique pieces that are not always baskets in the conventional sense. Central to our group’s aims is to challenge ourselves creatively, while at the same time sharing our enthusiasm and all our basketry skills with the general public. We do this by engaging in various public art projects around the country, involving the local communities and inspiring more people to try basketry.
MEETING AND MAKING WE TRY TO MEET once a month to visit exhibitions, galleries and museums, to gather and harvest our materials, and to share our knowledge and enthusiasm. Sometimes we just weave, eat and chat.
