The Basketry Collective

Gail Romanes

Making baskets is a fascinating craft. As you can see from this website all of us have made work which is not a basket, which is an important part of what we try to do. We keep on searching for new ways to make beautiful objects, experimenting with all sorts of natural and recycled materials.

When I retired in 2009 after working as a school administrator at the Royal College of Art I found I missed being in a creative atmosphere. I’ve always been interested in baskets and was intrigued by how some people used the traditional techniques in a contemporary way, but I knew how important it was to learn the basics before experimenting. And there’s a lot of satisfaction to be gained from simply making something well, whether it be a meal, a garden or a basket.

I  completed the City & Guilds Creative Basketry Course at City Lit in London in 2013. The exhibition was reviewed on Homebuildlifer Best of Baskets:  City Lit Creative Basketry Exhibition.
